How to Teach Praise Dance Choreography

• frequently used during praise and worship ceremonies or other church events as a way to convey emotion, spirituality and a Biblical message. One of the primary challenges facing praise dance choreographers is creating a dance that not only is fun and challenging for the dancers, but demonstrates a feeling of respect and spirituality. There are several ways you can teach  praise dance choreography to your dancers that will liven up any church experience by offering the audience the chance to experience worship through dance.

Instructions

1. • 1 Select a song for the dance and a corresponding Biblical lesson. Discuss with your dancers what message you want to convey to the audience. If your chosen scripture discusses truth, for example, your dancers will display a different attitude than if your scripture discusses sin. If this is your first performance, your dancers may prefer to have the message simply be that it is possible to worship God through dance.
   • 2 Pray with your dancers before each rehearsal and remind them that the intent behind praise dance is to lead the audience into a time of worship. Instead of offering simply a wonderful show, your dancers also must encourage the audience toward a prayerful attitude through their movements on stage.
   • 3 Demonstrate each dance movement to your dancers slowly. Watch each dancer perform the movement to ensure she understands the move. Assist any struggling dancers; perform the movement together as a group.
   • 4 Rehearse the dance without music. It is important for dancers to learn  the steps without music and how many beats each movement should last. Audio difficulties may occur during the performance during which a dancer may not be able to clearly hear the music or, if a dancer loses her place and becomes nervous, she will need to know the beat count of the dance to catch up and find her spot again. A measure of music consists of four beats, which is a good place to begin counting. Some choreographers prefer to present movements in eight counts. Talk with your dancers to find out what style of counting works for your group.
   • 5 Practice the dance with the music. Continue to count out loud during the song to make sure your dancers stay on target. After several practices, stop counting and let your members of your group dance to the song. Make any needed timing adjustments before your performance. For example, if a certain movement feels awkward or forced when performed with the song, modify it prior to the performance.
   • 6 Create new dance moves and encourage your dancers to create new moves that display the message of your song. Select dance moves that are fun but respectful. Since the performance is a religious event, avoid sensual or erotic dance moves that may deter from the message at hand. To get ideas for new dance moves, watch music videos or Christian praise dance videos to spark your creativity.

TAKE CLASS OFTEN AND MUCHThe natural tendency is to think,
Well, I am doing praise dance, so I need to take a praise dance class or attend a conference.

By all means yes! But please do not stop there. What about taking ballet to learn grace in carrying your arms and creating lines?  Or, a modern dance technique that will challenge you to find the breath and fluidity in your movement.  I say try and take all the dance classes you can and do so consistently.

The more I experience dance and its various forms, the more I begin to understand how I can more clearly "speak" through movement.  The more I enhance my movement vocabulary, the more articulate and creative my choreography becomes. 

Think for a moment to Alvin Ailey's Revelations.  What draws us in as an audience is not the song, for many of us did not grow up singing the spiritual.  What moves us is not the heart of the dancer because, quite frankly, some may not even be Christian.  What touches us to the very core is the intent of the dancers and the very passionate and creative way such a piece was choreographed.  We "wade in the water" with the dancers as Alvin Ailey's choreography whisks us magically to a spiritual moment in the back woods, that though we may have never directly experienced ourselves reminds and reinforces to us what we know is real in our hearts.

History of Praise Dance

The history of praise dance dates back to biblical times. The first mention of dance in the Bible is in the book  of Exodus when Miriam, sister of Moses, took a tambourine and led the women of Israel into a dance after witnessing the parting of the Red Sea. They expressed joy and celebration in their dance after witnessing God’s great miracle on their behalf.

Other Biblical records of dancing occurred after David slew the giant Goliath and the women sang "to one another in dance" (1 Samuel 29:5). King David also danced before the Lord, as he brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, recorded in 2 Samuel 6:14 of the Bible. In his writings found in the book of Psalms, King David has many references to dancing as a form of worship to God. One such reference that remains popular in teachings today is "Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp" (Psalm 149:3).

During the first 500 years of the Christian church, praise or liturgical dance remained an important part of church gatherings, due to its Judeo-Christian traditions. Christians were accustomed to celebrating in dance at worship and festivals because of the Hebrew traditions of dance.

The New Testament gives just a few direct references to dance. However, deeper studies into the original language of the New Testament suggest more references to dance than originally thought. Closer examination of the Aramaic language which Jews spoke, reveal the word for 'rejoice' and 'dance' are the same, in such references as dancing and leaping for joy (Luke 6:23) as well as 'dancing in the Spirit' (Luke 10:21).

Hey, I’m Roxi Arthur. I was born in Guyana South America, and raised in Canada. My Father was called into full time ministry when I was 13 and I became a PK (pastor’s kid for all you lay people LOL).   I grew up as a PK, basically my life revolved around church.  I have always loved to teach. Teaching through the Worship Arts, music and dance is exciting.
Our family ministered all over Canada and even had the opportunity to have the only multicultural church on the Six Nations Indian Reserve and the one thing that I have always found is that music draws people together.  Now that I’m in America, I’ve ministered to the White, Latino and Black communities and have gone from the conservative United Methodist to the jump up and shout Southern Baptists with everything else in between.  The one thing I’ve discovered is that, the power and anointing that flows through dance, and music transcends denominational, cultural and even language barriers allowing for the Holy Spirit to touch, heal and deliver.

About the MinistryBackground: On Aug. 9, 198l, Janet gave her life to Christ. Shortly after that, Janet felt the call of God on her life in a strong way. The Call

Jer. 20:9b. "His word was in my heart like a burning fire, shut up in my bones, I was weary of holding it back and I could not." God has called her as a prophetess. Ezra 5:2: So Zerubbabel the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and the prophets of God were with them, helping them. Ezra 6:14 So the elders of the Jews built and prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and finished. This is what the prophets were sent to do, to help build! God is building His church. The office of the prophet is essential to the body of Christ for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry. This is what she has been commissioned to do by the Lord through the prophetic. This is the work of the prophet through the true prophetic word of the Lord.

God is not looking for dancers just to dance anymore. God is looking for heaven to come to earth when we dance. This team dances at conferences, churches, youth rallies, and wherever the Lord opens the doors. This dance team dances with flags, fans,cloths, tambourines, and expressive sign language. She and her team also do workshops and seminars for training in dance.

(I.D.C) under the leadership of  Apostle Sabrina Mackenzie,  and the founder  of  Universal Dance  Alliance. I am  the author of  "Flaming Hearts and Frozen Feet" , "Effective Choreography for Praise Dancers"  and "The Amazing World Of  No Sew"

I am  also the author of several articles on praise dance ministry and Christian living.
